چکیده

The brown alga Dictyopteris serrata (Areschoug) Hoyt (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) is reported from the coast of western Australia, representing the first reliable record of this species from outside the south-western Indian Ocean. Distinguishing features of D. serrata are: a broad thallus with marginal teeth, veins extending from the midrib obliquely towards the blade margin, and embedded tetrasporangia borne singly or in small groups of usually two or three in fertile zones on the upper thallus branches. The species is apparently closely related to the North American Dictyopteris hoytii Taylor, and previously perceived vegetative differences are questioned. The two species may differ in tetrasporangial distribution, but further studies are required to describe the sporangia of D. hoytii in greater detail.

Species Diversity, Phylogeny and Large Scale Biogeographic Patterns of the Genus Padina (Phaeophyceae, Dictyotales).

The brown algal genus Padina (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) is distributed worldwide in tropical and temperate seas. Global species diversity and distribution ranges, however, remain largely unknown. Species-level diversity was reassessed using DNA-based, algorithmic species delineation techniques based on cox3 and rbcL sequence data from 221 specimens collected worldwide. This resulted in estimat...

Allelopathic interactions between the brown algal genus Lobophora (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) and scleractinian corals

Allelopathy has been recently suggested as a mechanism by which macroalgae may outcompete corals in damaged reefs. Members of the brown algal genus Lobophora are commonly observed in close contact with scleractinian corals and have been considered responsible for negative effects of macroalgae to scleractinian corals. Recent field assays have suggested the potential role of chemical mediators i...

Species Specificity of Bacteria Associated to the Brown Seaweeds Lobophora (Dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) and Their Potential for Induction of Rapid Coral Bleaching in Acropora muricata

While reef degradation is occurring worldwide, it is not uncommon to see phase shifts from coral to macroalgal dominated reefs. Numerous studies have addressed the mechanisms by which macroalgae may outcompete corals and a few recent studies highlighted the putative role of bacteria at the interface between macroalgae and corals. Some studies suggest that macroalgae may act as vectors and/or fo...

Distribution of pyrenoids among some brown algae.

The distribution of pyrenoids among some orders of the brown algae has been investigated with the electron microscope and a report on their occurrence is given, with particular reference to the results obtained with the light microscope by Simon (1954). Some illustrated detail of the structure of the pyrenoids and of the chromatophores is included. Pyrenoids were found to be present in the repr...

A Taxonomic Study of the Genus Padina (dictyotales, Phaeophyceae) including the Descriptions of Four New Species from Japan, Hawaii, and the Andaman Sea(1).

A taxonomic study of the genus Padina from Japan, Southeast Asia, and Hawaii based on morphology and gene sequence data (rbcL and cox3) resulted in the recognition of four new species, that is, Padina macrophylla and Padina ishigakiensis from Ryukyu Islands, Japan; Padina maroensis from Hawaii; and Padina usoehtunii from Myanmar and Thailand. All species are bistratose and morphologically diffe...
